Three straight bronzes. A two-set lead in Osaka. And no ticket to Macao.

Poland led Japan 2–0 in Osaka on Sunday afternoon. By the end of the day, they were out of the VNL 2026 Finals — and the decisive arithmetic had been accumulating for weeks before the tie-break even started.

The preliminary phase of the women’s Volleyball Nations League closed on 12 July. Poland finished eighth in the pool standings with seven wins and 20 match points. That would have been enough had hosts China also finished in the top eight. They did not. China ended the pool stage ninth but held a guaranteed place at the Macao Finals, so they entered as the eighth seed and Poland were listed ninth in the official final standings.

For the bronze medallists of the last three editions — Arlington in 2023, Bangkok in 2024 and Łódź in 2025 — it means no VNL Finals appearance at all. Stefano Lavarini’s side had reached the last eight in each of their three previous campaigns and won bronze every time.

How Poland lost their place at the VNL 2026 Finals

The last day supplied the drama. The standings supplied the explanation.

Poland and the Netherlands both finished 7–5. The Dutch collected 21 match points; Poland collected 20. One column of the standings explains the gap. All seven Dutch victories came in straight sets, each worth three points. Poland won three of theirs 3–2, each worth two.

Those tie-break wins were not minor results. Poland beat Belgium 3–2 on the opening day in Nanjing, edged Serbia 3–2 in the same pool, and came back to defeat preliminary-phase winners the United States 3–2 in Osaka on 9 July. But they were worth six match points instead of nine.

That left Sunday’s meeting with Japan as a direct battle for the last available berth. Poland took the first two sets 25–20 and 25–14. Japan then won three in a row — 25–19, 25–21 and 15–13 — with Yukiko Wada finishing on 27 points. Japan secured sixth place and qualification. Poland went home.

There is one more detail that stings. Poland’s only pool defeat to China came in Nanjing on 7 June, 1–3. The team that beat them head-to-head is now the team occupying the seed they lost.

Who qualified for the women’s VNL Finals in Macao

Seven teams earned their place on the court. China take the eighth spot as hosts. Our full explainer on the VNL format, points and qualification rules covers exactly how the host berth and the three-point scoring system work.

Bulgaria relegated, Ukraine survive on debut

The bottom of the table produced its own final-day drama.

Bulgaria finished 18th and lose their place for VNL 2027. Their fate was sealed by two results on 12 July: a 0–3 defeat to Germany in Belgrade and Ukraine’s 3–0 win over Belgium in Hong Kong. Oleksandra Milenko, Valeriia Nudha and Diana Meliushkyna each scored 10 points for Ukraine.

That victory was the most consequential of Ukraine’s debut campaign. It lifted them to 16th and kept them in the competition for 2027. Ukraine had replaced South Korea this season as the highest-ranked non-VNL team in the FIVB World Rankings, and they finished 3–9 with victories over Germany, Thailand and Belgium.

France ended 17th and also remain in the VNL for 2027. Bulgaria will be replaced by the highest-ranked eligible team outside the 2026 field.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Poland miss the VNL 2026 Finals?

Poland finished the Preliminary Phase eighth with a 7–5 record and 20 match points. Because China qualify automatically as Finals hosts and finished outside the top eight, they entered as the eighth seed and Poland were listed ninth in the official final standings. Poland’s 3–2 defeat to Japan on the last day, after leading 2–0, cost them the higher finish that would have kept them safe.

Which teams qualified for the women’s VNL 2026 Finals?

USA, Italy, Brazil, Türkiye, Canada, Japan and the Netherlands qualified through the Preliminary Phase standings. China join them as hosts.

Why is China at the Finals after finishing ninth?

Under the VNL competition regulations, the national team of the host territory is guaranteed a quarter-final place. If the hosts do not finish in the top eight, they take the eighth seed and the eighth-placed team misses the Finals. That put China against Preliminary Phase winners the United States.

Who was relegated from the women’s VNL?

Bulgaria. They finished 18th with two wins from 12 matches and five match points, and will be replaced in VNL 2027 by the highest-ranked eligible team that did not compete this year.

When and where are the women’s VNL 2026 Finals?

At the Macao East Asian Games Dome from 22 to 26 July 2026. Quarter-finals run on 22 and 23 July, semi-finals on 25 July, and the bronze and gold medal matches on 26 July.

Quick Summary

  • Poland out: Bronze medallists in 2023, 2024 and 2025, they are listed ninth in the final standings and miss the VNL Finals for the first time in four editions.

  • Canada’s first: Fifth place in the Preliminary Phase delivers Canada their maiden VNL Finals appearance.
  • Bottom of the table: Bulgaria are relegated; Ukraine secure their VNL 2027 place on debut with a final-day sweep of Belgium.
