China are already in as hosts. Japan are on the brink. Chicago is brutal, Belgrade holds the direct battle around seventh, and every win now matters.
| Standings through the end of Week 2 on 28 June 2026. Week 3 runs from 15 to 19 July by local venue dates; the final Chicago matches fall on 20 July in European time zones. |
The men’s VNL 2026 preliminary phase reaches its final week, and the qualification maths is tight. Seven sporting places at the Finals are still being contested, the current cut line is settled by set ratio, and the three Week 3 pools offer very different levels of difficulty.
The VNL 2026 men’s standings after Week 2 leave Türkiye seventh, ahead of Bulgaria only on set ratio. China are guaranteed a Finals berth as hosts in Ningbo. With China currently outside the top eight, the eight-team Finals field will consist of China plus the seven highest-ranked other teams. That places the effective qualification cut between seventh and eighth.
This preview explains where every contender stands, how the three pools shape the run-in, what the bubble teams are likely to need, and which matches could decide the field.
The Qualification Picture
Teams are ranked by number of wins first, then match points, then set ratio. For a full explanation of the ranking system and the host berth, see our VNL format guide.
| Pos | Team | W-L | Points | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Japan | 8-0 | 20 | On the brink |
| 2 | USA | 6-2 | 19 | Strong position |
| 3 | Poland | 6-2 | 17 | Strong position |
| 4 | Slovenia | 6-2 | 14 | Inside the zone |
| 5 | Ukraine | 5-3 | 16 | Inside the zone |
| 6 | Italy | 5-3 | 16 | Inside the zone |
| 7 | Türkiye | 5-3 | 14 | Last sporting place |
| CURRENT EFFECTIVE QUALIFICATION CUT | ||||
| 8 | Bulgaria | 5-3 | 14 | Out on set ratio |
| 9 | Brazil | 5-3 | 13 | Chasing |
| 10 | Germany | 4-4 | 12 | Chasing |
| 11 | Serbia | 4-4 | 12 | Chasing |
| 12 | France | 4-4 | 10 | Long shot |
China are 17th in the preliminary standings but are separately guaranteed a place as Finals hosts. Every team still has four matches to play.
Individual form may also shape the final week. Several qualification contenders feature prominently among the VNL 2026 men’s top scorers and statistical leaders after the first eight matches.
Three Pools, Three Very Different Weeks
The Week 3 draw is uneven. Chicago is packed with qualification rivals, Belgrade contains the most direct battle around seventh, and Osaka offers the least congested route for the teams already inside the zone.
Chicago (Pool 8): the group of death
USA, Poland, Bulgaria, Brazil, France and China.
| Team | Week 3 opponents |
|---|---|
| USA | China, Brazil, Bulgaria, Poland |
| Poland | Bulgaria, Brazil, France, USA |
| Bulgaria | Poland, China, USA, France |
| Brazil | France, USA, Poland, China |
| France | Brazil, China, Poland, Bulgaria |
| China | USA, France, Bulgaria, Brazil |
This is the most dangerous pool in the qualification race. Bulgaria, Brazil and France all need results, yet they must face one another as well as the USA and Poland. Every point won by one bubble team is often a point denied to another.
China are the lowest-ranked team in the pool and the opponent against whom Bulgaria, Brazil and France will expect to target a full three-point result. Dropping points against the hosts could be especially costly in a race this tight.
Belgrade (Pool 7): the direct battle around seventh
Slovenia, Ukraine, Türkiye, Serbia, Germany and Iran.
| Team | Week 3 opponents |
|---|---|
| Slovenia | Germany, Iran, Türkiye, Serbia |
| Ukraine | Iran, Serbia, Türkiye, Germany |
| Türkiye | Serbia, Ukraine, Slovenia, Iran |
| Germany | Slovenia, Iran, Serbia, Ukraine |
| Serbia | Türkiye, Ukraine, Germany, Slovenia |
| Iran | Ukraine, Germany, Slovenia, Türkiye |
Türkiye currently hold the final sporting place, while Germany and Serbia are the closest four-win challengers in this pool. Results in Belgrade will shape one side of the qualification race, while Bulgaria, Brazil and France try to break into the top seven from Chicago.
Ukraine and Slovenia both avoid the current top three and do not face any team ranked above them. That gives each a clearer path to protecting a place inside the qualification zone, although the concentration of direct rivals in Belgrade leaves little room for a poor week.
Osaka (Pool 9): the least congested route
Japan, Italy, Belgium, Canada, Argentina and Cuba.
| Team | Week 3 opponents |
|---|---|
| Japan | Italy, Canada, Belgium, Argentina |
| Italy | Japan, Belgium, Argentina, Cuba |
| Belgium | Cuba, Italy, Japan, Canada |
| Canada | Argentina, Japan, Cuba, Belgium |
| Argentina | Canada, Cuba, Italy, Japan |
| Cuba | Belgium, Argentina, Canada, Italy |
Japan and Italy each face only one opponent currently inside the effective qualification zone: each other. That makes their route less congested than the schedules facing the contenders in Chicago and Belgrade.
Japan can continue their pursuit of a perfect preliminary phase, while Italy have an opportunity to add wins and climb rather than spend the entire week defending sixth place.
What Each Bubble Team Is Likely to Need
These are practical qualification targets rather than mathematical guarantees. Because teams are ranked by wins before points, the final threshold will depend on results across both Chicago and Belgrade.
- Türkiye (7th): Protect the line. They are level with Bulgaria on wins and points and lead only on set ratio. Victories over Serbia and Iran would give them a strong base, but dropped sets could matter if Bulgaria match their win total.
- Bulgaria (8th): Beating China appears essential. A second victory against Poland, USA or France would significantly strengthen their chances, with the exact threshold depending on results in Belgrade and elsewhere in Chicago.
- Brazil (9th): A win over China also looks essential. Taking at least one more victory from France, USA or Poland would keep the push alive, but Brazil must climb two positions rather than one.
- Germany and Serbia (10th-11th): Both need a strong week in Belgrade and help from Türkiye or the Chicago chasers. As four-win teams, they must add victories rather than rely on narrow defeats and bonus points.
- France (12th): France probably need at least three wins to remain in serious contention and may require a clean sweep to control as much of their fate as possible. Even then, results elsewhere could still matter.
Japan are on the brink of qualification after an 8-0 start, but this preview does not treat them as mathematically confirmed. The USA and Poland hold substantial cushions but face each other and several Chicago contenders. Ukraine, Italy and Slovenia remain inside the cut with comparatively favourable schedules, although none are completely safe on the numbers.
Matches That Could Decide It
Match dates and start times vary by venue and time zone. The fixtures below carry the clearest qualification consequences:
- Türkiye vs Serbia (Belgrade): The seventh-placed side meets a direct four-win challenger. A Serbian victory would reopen the cut immediately.
- Ukraine vs Germany (Belgrade): Germany’s clearest opportunity to take a win from a team currently inside the zone.
- Germany vs Slovenia (Belgrade): Another four-win challenger tests itself against one of the pool leaders.
- Brazil vs France (Chicago): A direct collision between two teams below the cut. The loser will be left with very little margin.
- Poland vs Bulgaria (Chicago): Bulgaria need results against elite opposition, and this is one of their hardest chances to get one.
- Bulgaria vs France (Chicago): A late bubble-team meeting that could decide whether either side remains alive.
- Japan vs Italy (Osaka): The only meeting between two teams currently inside the effective zone in Osaka, and Japan’s unbeaten run faces one of its toughest remaining tests.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does Week 3 of the men’s VNL 2026 start?
The third and final preliminary week begins on 15 July 2026. It officially runs through 19 July by local venue dates, although the final Chicago matches fall on 20 July in European time zones.
Does China qualify for the VNL 2026 Finals automatically?
Yes. China are guaranteed a place as hosts of the Finals in Ningbo. Because they currently sit outside the top eight, the seven highest-ranked other teams will join them.
Who holds the last qualification place right now?
As of 28 June 2026, Türkiye occupy the seventh and final sporting place. They are level with Bulgaria on wins and points but lead on set ratio, leaving Bulgaria just outside.
Can France still reach the Finals?
Mathematically, yes. France sit 12th with a 4-4 record, but they probably need at least three wins and may need all four against Brazil, China, Poland and Bulgaria, plus favourable results elsewhere.
Which teams are closest to qualification?
China are already in as hosts. Japan are on the brink after an 8-0 start, while the USA and Poland hold strong positions. Ukraine, Italy and Slovenia also begin Week 3 inside the effective cut.
Why is the qualification cut after seventh and not eighth?
The host nation takes one of the eight Finals places regardless of its preliminary ranking. With China outside the top eight, only seven sporting places remain, moving the effective cut up one position.
