How the 24-team CEV EuroVolley Women 2026 works — from four six-team pools to the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and the gold medal match.
UPDATED | August 2026 • 24-team, four-pool format
The 2026 CEV Women’s European Volleyball Championship brings together 24 national teams for a 17-day tournament staged across Türkiye, Czechia, Azerbaijan and Sweden. The competition starts with four pools of six teams, with every nation playing five group matches. The top four teams in each pool advance to the Round of 16, where the tournament becomes a straight knockout.
From that point, every match is elimination volleyball: Round of 16, quarterfinal, semifinal and either the gold or bronze medal match. A team that reaches a medal match will therefore play nine matches in total — five in the pool phase and four in the knockout stage.
This guide explains the complete Women’s EuroVolley 2026 competition format, the group standings system, ranking points and tiebreakers, the official knockout bracket, qualification pathways, host cities and the number of matches played at each stage.

What Is the CEV EuroVolley Women?
CEV EuroVolley Women is Europe’s senior women’s national-team championship. It is the continental championship organised by the European Volleyball Confederation and is held separately from annual competitions such as the Volleyball Nations League.
The European Championship is not a league season. Teams first qualify for the final tournament, then compete in a concentrated event that combines a pool phase with a knockout bracket. The 2026 edition features 24 teams and 76 matches.
Türkiye enter the 2026 tournament as defending European champions after winning the 2023 title. Unlike the VNL, where teams play a long preliminary schedule before a Final 8, EuroVolley immediately divides the qualified field into four groups and sends 16 teams into a four-round knockout phase.
How Does the Women’s EuroVolley 2026 Format Work?
The tournament has two main stages:
1. Pool Phase — 24 teams divided into four groups of six.
2. Knockout Phase — Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and medal matches.
There is no second group stage and no reseeding after the pools. Once the final pool standings are known, each qualified team is placed into a predetermined Round of 16 slot according to its pool and finishing position.
Pool Phase
Four Pools of Six Teams
The 24 teams are divided into four pools — A, B, C and D — with six national teams in each. Each pool is played as a complete round robin, meaning every team faces each of the other five teams in its group once.
That produces 15 matches in each pool and 60 pool-phase matches across the tournament.
| Pool | Host city | Teams |
|---|---|---|
| A | Istanbul, Türkiye | Türkiye, Latvia, Poland, Germany, Slovenia, Hungary |
| B | Brno, Czechia | Czechia, Austria, Serbia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Greece |
| C | Baku, Azerbaijan | Azerbaijan, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Romania, Spain |
| D | Gothenburg, Sweden | Sweden, Montenegro, Italy, France, Slovakia, Croatia |
How Many Teams Advance?
The top four teams in each pool qualify for the Round of 16. The teams finishing fifth and sixth are eliminated.
With four qualifying teams from each of the four pools, 16 national teams remain after the group phase.
EuroVolley Match Points System
Pool standings are not based only on the number of sets won. CEV uses the standard volleyball ranking-points system:
| Match result | Winner | Loser |
|---|---|---|
| 3–0 or 3–1 | 3 ranking points | 0 ranking points |
| 3–2 | 2 ranking points | 1 ranking point |
A five-set loss therefore still gives a team one ranking point, while a 3–0 or 3–1 defeat gives none.
Important: ranking points are not the first criterion used to order teams. The number of matches won is considered before ranking points.
How Pool Standings and Tiebreakers Work
CEV ranks teams in each pool using the following order:
1. Matches won
2. Ranking points
3. Set quotient (sets won ÷ sets lost)
4. Point quotient (points scored ÷ points conceded)
5. Head-to-head result(s)
1. Matches Won
The team with more victories is placed higher. This comes before the total number of ranking points.
2. Ranking Points
If teams have the same number of wins, the points earned from match results are compared.
3. Set Quotient
If the tie remains, CEV compares the ratio of sets won to sets lost. A higher quotient gives the better position.
4. Point Quotient
If teams are still level, total rally points scored are divided by total rally points conceded.
5. Head-to-Head
If the preceding criteria do not separate the teams, results between the tied teams are used.
How the EuroVolley 2026 Knockout Bracket Works
The knockout phase begins with 16 teams. It is single elimination: lose once and the championship run ends. There is one exception for the semifinal losers, who remain in the tournament to play for the bronze medal.
The bracket is not created from one overall 1-to-16 ranking. Instead, teams cross over between specific pools.
Round of 16: Pools A and C
Teams from Pools A and C are paired in Istanbul. First-place teams face fourth-place teams from the opposite pool, while second-place teams face third-place teams.
| Match | Round of 16 pairing |
|---|---|
| EF1 | A1 vs C4 |
| EF2 | C1 vs A4 |
| EF3 | A2 vs C3 |
| EF4 | C2 vs A3 |
Round of 16: Pools B and D
Teams from Pools B and D use the same crossover principle, with these matches leading into the quarterfinals played in Brno.
| Match | Round of 16 pairing |
|---|---|
| EF5 | B1 vs D4 |
| EF6 | D1 vs B4 |
| EF7 | B2 vs D3 |
| EF8 | D2 vs B3 |
Quarterfinal Pairings
| Quarterfinal | Pairing |
|---|---|
| QF1 | Winner EF1 vs Winner EF4 |
| QF2 | Winner EF2 vs Winner EF3 |
| QF3 | Winner EF5 vs Winner EF8 |
| QF4 | Winner EF6 vs Winner EF7 |
QF1 and QF2 belong to the Istanbul side of the bracket. QF3 and QF4 are played in Brno.
Semifinals
| Semifinal | Pairing |
|---|---|
| SF1 | Winner QF1 vs Winner QF4 |
| SF2 | Winner QF2 vs Winner QF3 |
This means the two geographic halves of the knockout bracket cross at the semifinal stage. All semifinalists travel to Istanbul for the final weekend.
Medal Matches
The semifinal winners advance to the gold medal match. The semifinal losers meet in the bronze medal match. Both matches are played in Istanbul on 6 September 2026.
How Teams Qualified for Women’s EuroVolley 2026
The 24 places in the 2026 final tournament were filled through two routes: automatic qualification and the EuroVolley qualifiers.
Automatic Qualification: 12 Teams
Four places went to the host nations — Türkiye, Czechia, Azerbaijan and Sweden. Eight additional automatic places went to the highest-placed eligible teams from EuroVolley 2023 that were not already qualified as hosts.
| Qualification route | Teams |
|---|---|
| Hosts | Türkiye, Czechia, Azerbaijan, Sweden |
| Via EuroVolley 2023 ranking | Serbia, Netherlands, Italy, Poland, France, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Slovakia |
EuroVolley Qualifiers: 12 Teams
The remaining 12 places were decided in qualifying pools. The seven pool winners qualified directly, together with the five best second-placed teams.
The teams that came through the qualifiers were Germany, Belgium, Hungary, Slovenia, Montenegro, Latvia, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Austria, Croatia and Romania.
Where Is Women’s EuroVolley 2026 Played?
Four countries host the pool phase, but only Istanbul and Brno continue into the knockout rounds. The tournament gradually narrows geographically until every remaining team reaches Istanbul for the semifinal and medal weekend.
| City | Main role in the tournament | Matches |
|---|---|---|
| Istanbul | Pool A, 4 Round of 16, 2 quarterfinals, semifinals, bronze and final | 25 |
| Brno | Pool B, 4 Round of 16, 2 quarterfinals | 21 |
| Baku | Pool C | 15 |
| Gothenburg | Pool D | 15 |
Istanbul, Türkiye
Sinan Erdem Sports Hall hosts Pool A and becomes the main finals venue. The tournament’s semifinals, bronze medal match and final are all played there.
Brno, Czechia
The Brno Exhibition Centre hosts Pool B, four Round of 16 matches and two quarterfinals.
Baku, Azerbaijan
The National Gymnastics Arena hosts all 15 matches in Pool C.
Gothenburg, Sweden
Scandinavium hosts all 15 matches in Pool D.
How Many Matches Are Played at EuroVolley Women 2026?
| Stage | Matches |

| Pool phase | 60 |
| Round of 16 | 8 |
| Quarterfinals | 4 |
| Semifinals | 2 |
| Bronze medal match | 1 |
| Gold medal match | 1 |
| Total | 76 |
A team eliminated in the pool phase plays five matches. A Round of 16 team plays six, a quarterfinalist seven, and every semifinalist completes nine matches because the semifinal losers also play the bronze medal match.
EuroVolley Women 2026 Tournament Timeline
| Stage | Dates |
|---|---|
| Pool phase | 21–28 August 2026 |
| Round of 16 | 30 August–1 September 2026 |
| Quarterfinals | 2–3 September 2026 |
| Rest / travel day | 4 September 2026 |
| Semifinals | 5 September 2026 |
| Bronze and gold medal matches | 6 September 2026 |
Because pools finish on different dates and the knockout phase is split between Istanbul and Brno, not every qualified team follows the same daily schedule. CEV also reserves flexibility in the ordering of knockout matches to meet international broadcast requirements.
How EuroVolley Differs From the Volleyball Nations League
EuroVolley and the VNL are both major international volleyball competitions, but their structures are very different.
| Feature | Women’s EuroVolley 2026 | VNL |
|---|---|---|
| Competition type | Continental championship | Annual global league |
| Teams | 24 | 18 in the current VNL format |
| Initial stage | 4 separate pools | One combined standings table |
| Matches before knockout | 5 per team | 12 per team |
| Teams in knockout stage | 16 | 8 |
| Knockout entry | Top 4 from each pool | Finals host + highest-ranked teams |
| Frequency | Periodic continental championship | Annual |
The practical difference for fans is simple: EuroVolley reaches elimination volleyball much sooner. A strong pool position matters not only because it secures qualification, but because first and second place produce a more favourable Round of 16 matchup on paper than finishing third or fourth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is EuroVolley 2026 being held three years after the 2023 edition?
The gap between EuroVolley 2023 and EuroVolley 2026 is a result of changes to the international volleyball calendar. EuroVolley had previously followed a two-year cycle, with recent editions held in 2019, 2021 and 2023.
As part of the new FIVB calendar introduced for 2025–2028, the World Championships also changed from a four-year cycle to a biennial format, with editions in 2025 and 2027. Continental championships were moved to 2026 as part of the reorganised international schedule and Olympic qualification pathway.
The three-year gap from 2023 to 2026 is therefore a transitional exception rather than a permanent change. EuroVolley is scheduled to return to a two-year cycle, with the next edition following in 2028.
