Serbia reopened the race, Ukraine lost their margin for error, and Brazil fell below the cut before a difficult meeting with Poland.
Standings through Matchday 2 of Week 3 (16 July 2026 local venue dates). Article updated 17 July 2026.
One night changed the men’s VNL 2026 qualification race again. The United States swept Brazil and joined Japan in the Finals. Serbia beat Ukraine 3-1 and moved back into contention. Brazil dropped below the cut only one match after climbing above it, while Italy strengthened their position with a straight-set win over Belgium.
The next two matches carrying the greatest weight are direct and unforgiving: Türkiye against Ukraine in Belgrade, and Brazil against Poland in Chicago. The first can push Ukraine outside the top seven. The second may determine whether Brazil still control their own route to Ningbo.
This update follows our Matchday 2 qualification preview and uses the same rule that shapes the entire table: wins come before match points. Our VNL format and qualification guide explains the full ranking order and the guaranteed host berth.
The Picture at a Glance
- Qualified: Japan and the United States. China also hold a guaranteed Finals berth as hosts.
- Ukraine remain sixth, but their 3-1 loss to Serbia reduced the margin between sixth and ninth to a single win.
- Türkiye vs Ukraine is a direct battle between two teams on six wins. The winner moves to seven and takes a major step toward the Finals.
- Brazil are eighth after losing 3-0 to the USA. They now face Poland before finishing against China.
- Serbia are alive again in ninth on five wins and can still finish with seven.
- Iran’s five-set win over Germany moved them close to safety in the race to remain in the VNL for 2027.
Standings After Matchday 2 of Week 3
China are guaranteed a place in the Finals as hosts, so only the top seven teams in the Preliminary Phase qualify through the standings.

USA Join Japan in the Finals
The United States made their qualification certain with a 3-0 win over Brazil, taking the sets 25-23, 25-19 and 25-18. The result lifted them to eight wins and 25 points, while Brazil fell to 6-4 and dropped from seventh to eighth.
There is an important distinction in the qualification maths: eight wins are not automatically enough for every team. In an extreme combination of results, several teams can still finish on eight victories. The USA are safe because their eight wins are backed by 25 points and the remaining schedule cannot produce seven non-host teams above them.
Japan had already secured their place and then extended their perfect record to 10-0 by recovering from two sets down against Canada. Six of Japan’s ten victories have now come in five sets, but the unbeaten run continues.
Serbia Reopen the Race and Put Ukraine Under Pressure
Ukraine entered Thursday in fifth place and with a chance to build a cushion. Instead, Serbia turned the race in the opposite direction.
Ukraine won the opening set 25-22, but Serbia took the next three 25-17, 25-21 and 25-23. Veljko Masulovic led the hosts with 26 points, while Vasyl Tupchii scored 15 for Ukraine. Serbia climbed to ninth on five wins and 15 points; Ukraine slipped to sixth on six wins and 19 points.
The defeat did two things at once. It revived Serbia’s campaign, because the hosts can still reach seven wins by beating Germany and Slovenia. It also removed Ukraine’s room for a second poor result. The teams from fifth to eighth now all have six victories, separated only by points and the number of matches played.
Türkiye vs Ukraine: The Most Important Match in Belgrade
Türkiye and Ukraine meet on 17 July at 16:30 local time in Belgrade, which is 17:30 in Kyiv. Both start the match with six victories, but Türkiye have played one fewer match.
| Result | Immediate effect |
| Ukraine win | Ukraine move to seven wins and protect a place inside the qualification zone before their final match against Germany. |
| Türkiye win | Türkiye move to seven wins. Ukraine remain on six and could fall below the cut if Brazil also beat Poland. |
| Five-set result | The winner still gains the decisive seventh victory, while the loser collects one point that could matter in a later tie on wins. |
A Ukrainian victory would not mathematically complete qualification, but it would restore control. Ukraine would then finish against Germany with seven wins already secured. A defeat would leave them needing a result against Germany and help from Brazil, Serbia, Bulgaria or Italy.
The match is also a contrast in momentum. Türkiye opened Week 3 by sweeping Serbia, while Ukraine followed a win over Iran with a damaging defeat to the hosts.
Brazil Fall Below the Cut Before the Poland Test
Brazil’s return to the top seven lasted one matchday. After sweeping France, they were comprehensively beaten by the United States and now sit eighth, behind Türkiye on wins and behind Italy and Ukraine on match points.
Their remaining schedule is simple to read and difficult to execute: Poland first, China last. Beating China is the expected result, but relying on that match alone would leave Brazil on seven victories and dependent on other teams.
| Brazil finish | Qualification outlook |
| Beat Poland and China | Brazil finish with eight wins and move into a very strong qualification position. |
| Lose to Poland, beat China | Brazil finish with seven wins and need help from results involving Ukraine, Türkiye, Serbia, Bulgaria and Italy. |
| Lose both | Brazil remain on six wins and are almost certain to miss the Finals. |
Brazil vs Poland starts at 20:00 local time in Chicago on 17 July, which is 04:00 in Kyiv on 18 July. Poland begin the match third on seven wins. One more victory would put the defending champions in a very strong position, although their final schedule still includes France and the United States.
Italy, Slovenia and the Teams Around the Cut
Italy produced the result they needed against Belgium, winning 3-0 and moving to fifth. Their final two opponents are Argentina and Cuba, so six wins and 20 points already place them in the strongest position among the four teams currently tied on six victories.
Slovenia are fourth on seven wins and face Iran, Türkiye and Serbia. One victory would take them to eight and put them close to qualification, but it is still safer to describe eight wins as a strong total rather than a universal mathematical guarantee.
Bulgaria remain a dangerous outsider. They have five wins with three matches left, beginning against China. France and Serbia can reach seven wins, while Germany can reach six and need an exceptional chain of results.
Iran Move Close to VNL 2027 Safety
Iran’s 3-2 comeback win over Germany may prove more important for survival than for qualification. Iran recovered after falling 1-2 behind and won the fifth set 15-12, improving to three wins and 11 points in 13th place.
Only the last team in the final VNL standings is relegated. Iran are now above Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Cuba and preliminary-phase bottom side China. Because Canada and Cuba still have to play each other, Iran are close to safety, although the position is not yet mathematically locked. Their remaining matches against Slovenia and Türkiye are both difficult.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have the USA qualified for the Men’s VNL 2026 Finals?
Yes. Their 3-0 win over Brazil took them to eight victories and 25 points, which guarantees a top-seven finish. Japan are also qualified, while China hold a guaranteed place as Finals hosts.
Does eight wins guarantee qualification?
Not for every team in every scenario. Several teams can still finish on eight wins, so match points and the remaining schedule matter. Eight wins put a team in a very strong position, but the USA are mathematically safe because they also hold 25 points.
What happens if Ukraine lose to Türkiye?
Ukraine stay on six wins. They could drop outside the top seven immediately if Brazil beat Poland, and their final match against Germany would become essential.
Can Serbia still reach the Finals?
Yes, but they need to win both remaining matches against Germany and Slovenia to reach seven victories, then rely on at least two teams above them failing to reach seven or losing the tiebreakers.
What do Brazil need?
Winning both remaining matches against Poland and China would take Brazil to eight victories and a strong position. A split leaves them on seven and dependent on results elsewhere.
Are Iran safe from relegation?
Almost, but not mathematically. Their third victory and 11 points create a substantial cushion, and the Canada-Cuba head-to-head limits how both rivals can improve, but a narrow chain of results can still keep Iran involved.
