Japan cannot be caught. Five of the eight Finals seats are taken. And the team that led 2-0 in Belgrade now needs a favour from Chicago.
Standings through Matchday 3 of Week 3 (17 July 2026, local venue dates). Article updated 18 July 2026.
Japan have finished the job at the top. Their 3-0 win over Belgium made it eleven from eleven and put first place beyond reach, because no one else can reach eleven wins.
Below them, the preliminary phase has resolved into something unusually clean. Four teams are mathematically through – Japan, the United States, Poland and Slovenia. China hold the eighth berth as hosts. That leaves three sporting places for seven teams, and two matchdays to settle them.
The cruellest part belongs to Ukraine. They led Türkiye two sets to nil in Belgrade, lost the next three, and in the space of ninety minutes went from controlling their own qualification to depending on results elsewhere. For the previous step in the race, see our Matchday 3 qualification update.
The Picture at a Glance
- Qualified: Japan, USA, Poland and Slovenia. China are in as Finals hosts. Five seats are filled and three remain.
- Japan are guaranteed first place on eleven wins; nobody else can reach eleven.
- Only seven teams can reach eight or more wins – and four of them are already there.
- Ukraine and Italy are level on six wins and 20 points. Italy are sixth and Ukraine seventh because Italy lead on set ratio.
- Ukraine can no longer qualify through their own result alone. Their ceiling is seven wins, and even a victory over Germany would still require help elsewhere.
- Canada must beat Cuba on Saturday morning or their place in the VNL is gone.
Standings After Matchday 3 of Week 3
China are guaranteed a Finals place as hosts, so only the top seven qualify through the standings. For context, compare this table with our Men’s VNL standings after Week 2.

The Eight-Win Rule Now Decides Everything
The maths has narrowed to one number. Exactly seven teams can finish with at least eight victories: Japan, the USA, Poland and Slovenia, who have already reached that mark, plus Türkiye, Italy and Bulgaria, who can still get there.
Everyone else has too few matches remaining to reach eight wins. Ukraine, Brazil, Serbia and France are all capped at seven, no matter what they do.
That fact governs the whole run-in because wins are ranked before match points. A team on eight wins finishes above a team on seven, however many points the second team has collected. Our VNL format and qualification guide explains the wins-first ranking system, match points and host berth.
So the three remaining places will be settled by a simple question: how many of Türkiye, Italy and Bulgaria actually reach eight? If all three do, every seven-win team is out. If any one of them falls short, a door opens.
Ukraine Led 2-0 and Lost Their Grip
Ukraine won the first two sets in Belgrade, 27-25 and 25-20. Then Türkiye took the third 25-23, won the fourth 25-16, and closed the tie-break 15-11.
The scoreboard damage was one point instead of three. The structural damage was far worse.
Before that match, beating Türkiye and Germany would have given Ukraine eight wins and a mathematical guarantee. Now their maximum is seven wins and 23 points – and that is not enough on its own. Even if Ukraine beat Germany on Sunday, they can still finish eighth. A defeat would not automatically eliminate them, but it would leave only a narrow path requiring several rivals to fail.
Four teams are already certain to finish above Ukraine because Japan, the USA, Poland and Slovenia all have eight or more wins and Ukraine cannot get past seven. Three teams are the clearest direct threats:
| Threat | What can put them above Ukraine | Reality |
|---|---|---|
| Türkiye | One win from Slovenia or Iran | Very likely – Iran are 13th |
| Italy | Two wins guarantee it. One win may also be enough, depending on Ukraine’s result, match points and set ratio. | Likely to remain above the cut |
| Bulgaria | Two wins guarantee it. One win can still be enough if Ukraine fails to maximise their final match. | Difficult – they still face the USA and France |
Ukraine miss out if three teams join the four already certain to finish above them. Their clearest route is therefore short: beat Germany, then hope at least one of Türkiye, Italy or Bulgaria falls short of eight wins.
That makes USA vs Bulgaria the most important fixture of Ukraine’s season – and Ukraine are not playing in it. Bulgaria must beat a USA side with the best set ratio in the competition (2.800) and then beat France as well to guarantee qualification. If Bulgaria slip once and Ukraine beat Germany, Ukraine are through.
The margin already looks painful in the table. Ukraine and Italy are level on six wins and 20 points, but Italy have played one fewer match and lead on set ratio, 1.411 to 1.263. Those three lost sets in Belgrade are the difference between sixth and seventh.
What Each Contender Needs
| Team | Remaining | The requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Türkiye | Slovenia, Iran | Any one win guarantees a Finals place. Lose both and they can fall sharply. |
| Italy | Argentina, Cuba | Two wins guarantee it. One win leaves them on seven and dependent on Ukraine, Bulgaria and the tiebreakers. |
| Ukraine | Germany | Best route: beat Germany. A win creates a strong path but still needs at least one rival to fall short; a defeat leaves only a narrow mathematical chance. |
| Bulgaria | USA, France | Two wins guarantee it. One win leaves them on seven victories and between 19 and 21 points, depending on the scorelines. |
| Brazil | China | A win gives seven victories and 19 points. They still need several rivals to fail. |
| Serbia | Germany, Slovenia | Two wins give seven victories and 21 points. Alive, but they need most teams above them to stumble. |
| France | Poland, Bulgaria | Two wins give seven victories and 19 points. Mathematically alive; realistically close to finished. |
Germany’s 3-2 defeat to Iran ended their campaign. Capped at six wins, they are out of the Finals race, along with every team below them in the standings.
Saturday’s Matches
Times are Kyiv time. The two Chicago fixtures are played on Saturday evening locally, which falls after midnight in Ukraine.
| Pool | Match | Kyiv time | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Osaka | Canada vs Cuba | 07:00 | Survival. Canada must win. |
| Osaka | Argentina vs Italy | 13:20 | Italy’s first step toward eight wins |
| Belgrade | Türkiye vs Slovenia | 17:30 | A Türkiye win locks in their Finals place |
| Belgrade | Serbia vs Germany | 21:00 | Serbia must win to stay faintly alive |
| Chicago | France vs Poland | 00:00 (19 Jul) | France’s last mathematical stand |
| Chicago | USA vs Bulgaria | 04:00 (19 Jul) | The match that shapes the cut |
The final matchday follows on Sunday with nine fixtures, including Ukraine vs Germany, Türkiye vs Iran, Cuba vs Italy and Bulgaria vs France.
Canada Face a Survival Match
The bottom of the table has its own deadline, and it arrives first.
Because China take a Finals place as hosts, they are ranked among the top eight in the final standings and cannot go down. That leaves Canada as the lowest of the teams who will not reach Ningbo – which, as things stand, means relegation.
| Canada’s results | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Lose to Cuba | Relegated, whatever happens against Belgium |
| Beat Cuba, lose to Belgium | Survival hinges on Cuba vs Italy |
| Beat Cuba and Belgium | Safe |
Losing to Cuba is fatal because it works twice against them: Canada stay short of wins while Cuba climb to three, and every other team outside the Finals has at least three. Beating Cuba is the only move that both adds a win and denies one.
One Rule, First Place to Last
There is a thread running through this entire table, and it explains almost every argument about it.
Türkiye sit fifth on 19 points – below Italy and Ukraine on points, and above them in the standings, because they have seven wins to six. At the other end, Canada have 10 points to Cuba’s seven and sit beneath them, because Cuba have two wins to Canada’s one.
Canada’s ten points are the strangest number in the competition. Seven of their nine defeats have gone to five sets. Seven times they have been a single set from a win; seven times they have collected the consolation point instead. It has given them more points than two teams above them and a place in the relegation zone.
Wins before points, from first place to eighteenth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which teams have qualified for the Men’s VNL 2026 Finals?
Japan, the United States, Poland and Slovenia have qualified through the standings. China are guaranteed a place as Finals hosts. Three sporting places remain.
Has Japan won the preliminary phase?
Yes. Japan’s 3-0 win over Belgium took them to eleven wins from eleven matches. No other team can reach eleven, so first place is secured.
Can Ukraine still qualify for the VNL 2026 Finals?
Yes, but not through their own result alone. Ukraine’s clearest route is to beat Germany and receive help elsewhere. A defeat would not automatically eliminate them, but qualification would then require several competing teams to lose.
What does Türkiye need to qualify?
One more win. A victory over either Slovenia or Iran takes Türkiye to eight wins and guarantees a top-seven finish.
Which teams can still reach eight wins?
Seven teams can finish with at least eight victories: Japan, the USA, Poland and Slovenia, who are already there, plus Türkiye, Italy and Bulgaria. Ukraine, Brazil, Serbia and France are all capped at seven.
Who is in danger of relegation?
Canada sit lowest among the teams that will not reach the Finals. They must beat Cuba on Saturday to survive; a defeat relegates them regardless of their final match against Belgium.
Quick Summary
- Japan sealed first place with an eleventh straight win; the USA, Poland and Slovenia are also through, and China are in as hosts.
- Three sporting places remain for seven teams, with two matchdays to play.
- Only Türkiye, Italy and Bulgaria can still join the four teams already on eight or more wins.
- Ukraine blew a 2-0 lead against Türkiye and are now capped at seven wins. Beating Germany is their clearest route, but even a win does not guarantee qualification.
- USA vs Bulgaria is the fixture most likely to shape the cut – a Bulgarian defeat would open the door for Ukraine.
- Canada must beat Cuba on Saturday or lose their VNL place, with China protected by the hosts’ Finals berth.
