Four teams remain for three Finals places. Ukraine need a win and help, Japan can complete the first unbeaten men’s VNL Preliminary Phase, and the top four still have quarter-final seeding to settle.
Standings through Matchday 4 of Week 3 (18 July 2026, local venue dates). Final-day schedule shown in Kyiv time. Article updated 19 July 2026.
The final day of the men’s VNL 2026 Preliminary Phase has three separate races packed into one schedule. Italy, Bulgaria, Türkiye and Ukraine are competing for the last three sporting places in Ningbo. Japan are one victory from a historic perfect campaign. And Poland, Slovenia and the United States are still playing for the quarter-final draw.
Ukraine’s equation is the most unforgiving. The 3-2 defeat to Türkiye and Bulgaria’s 3-1 upset of the United States pushed Raul Lozano’s side below the cut. Ukraine must beat Germany and then need at least one team above them to lose.
The qualification picture has changed repeatedly since our previous Ukraine-Türkiye update, but one principle has remained decisive: wins are ranked before match points. Our VNL format and qualification guide explains the complete order of tiebreakers and the host berth.
The Picture at a Glance

Four Teams for Three Finals Places
Italy, Bulgaria and Türkiye begin the day above the cut with seven wins. Ukraine are one place outside with six. That means all three teams currently inside control their own fate: win, reach eight victories and qualify.
If Italy, Bulgaria and Türkiye all win, Ukraine are out regardless of what happens against Germany. If any one of them loses, Ukraine can take the opening – but only after winning their own match.
| Team | Final opponent | What they need |
|---|---|---|
| Italy | Cuba | A win guarantees qualification. A loss opens a scoreline-dependent route for Ukraine. |
| Bulgaria | France | A win guarantees qualification. Any loss allows a winning Ukraine to finish above them. |
| Türkiye | Iran | A win guarantees qualification. Any loss allows a winning Ukraine to finish above them. |
| Ukraine | Germany | Must win, then need at least one of Italy, Bulgaria or Türkiye to lose. |
Ukraine Must Win – Then Watch the Other Courts
Ukraine’s first condition is absolute: beat Germany. A defeat leaves them on six victories, while Italy, Bulgaria and Türkiye already have seven. No tiebreaker can repair that gap.
Any Ukrainian victory produces at least 22 match points: 23 for a 3-0 or 3-1 win, and 22 for a 3-2 win. That is enough to pass Bulgaria or Türkiye if either loses.
| Result elsewhere | Ukraine also need | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Bulgaria lose to France | Any Ukraine win | Ukraine finish above Bulgaria on match points. |
| Türkiye lose to Iran | Any Ukraine win | Ukraine finish above Türkiye on match points. |
| Italy lose 0-3 or 1-3 | Ukraine win 3-0 | Ukraine move above Italy on set ratio. |
| Italy lose 0-3 | Ukraine win 3-1 | Both finish on 23 points and a 27:20 set record; point ratio decides. |
The cleanest path is therefore simple: Ukraine beat Germany, and either Bulgaria or Türkiye lose. The Italy route exists, but it depends heavily on the exact set scores.
The timing adds another layer. Türkiye play before Ukraine, so the result against Iran may already open or close one route. Bulgaria do not face France until midnight Kyiv time. Ukraine could complete their own match at around 19:30 and then wait several hours for the final answer from Chicago.
Final-Day Schedule
| Pool | Match | Kyiv time | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Osaka | Belgium vs Canada | 07:00 | No effect on Finals qualification |
| Osaka | Cuba vs Italy | 09:30 | Italy can secure a Finals place |
| Osaka | Japan vs Argentina | 13:20 | Japan chase a historic 12-0 |
| Belgrade | Türkiye vs Iran | 14:00 | Türkiye qualify with a win |
| Belgrade | Ukraine vs Germany | 17:30 | Ukraine must win |
| Chicago | China vs Brazil | 20:00 | Brazil are eliminated; China prepare as hosts |
| Belgrade | Serbia vs Slovenia | 21:00 | Slovenia play for second-place seeding |
| Chicago | Bulgaria vs France | 00:00 (20 Jul) | Bulgaria qualify with a win |
| Chicago | USA vs Poland | 04:00 (20 Jul) | Final match; second-to-fourth seeding |
The two Chicago matches are played on 19 July local time but fall after midnight in Ukraine. USA-Poland closes the entire men’s Preliminary Phase.
Japan Chase the First Perfect Men’s VNL Preliminary Phase
Japan have already secured first place, but the match against Argentina still carries historic weight. Victory would complete a 12-0 Preliminary Phase – the first unbeaten men’s campaign in VNL history.
No men’s team has finished the Preliminary Phase with zero losses in any completed VNL edition since the competition began in 2018. Slovenia led the 2024 Preliminary Phase at 11-1, and Brazil repeated an 11-1 top seed in 2025. Japan now have the chance to go one step further.
The route has not been routine. Japan have won six five-set matches, repeatedly surviving pressure rather than simply sweeping the field. A final victory over Argentina would turn that resilience into a record no previous men’s VNL leader has matched.
Poland, Slovenia and USA Still Play for the Quarter-Final Draw
Qualification is settled for the top four, but their final positions are not. The VNL Finals formula pairs first with eighth, second with seventh, third with sixth and fourth with fifth.
Japan are locked into first place and, with China entering as the host seed, their quarter-final route is effectively fixed. Poland, Slovenia and USA are still competing for positions two through four – and for opponents from the fifth-to-seventh group.
- Poland secure second place with a win over USA.
- Slovenia can move to second if they beat Serbia and Poland lose.
- USA move above Poland with any victory in the last match of the Preliminary Phase.
USA-Poland is especially intriguing because it starts after every other Preliminary Phase match. Both teams will know the final qualifiers, the exact positions from fifth to seventh and the quarter-final consequences attached to each result before the first serve.
Brazil Are Out; Canada Are Relegated
Brazil can still reach seven wins by beating China, but they cannot recover a Finals place. Italy already hold seven wins and 23 points, Bulgaria have seven and 20, and Türkiye have seven with a far stronger set ratio than Brazil can reach. The South Americans’ final match now affects only their finishing position.
At the bottom, Canada’s 0-3 defeat to Cuba confirmed relegation from the 2027 VNL. Canada can finish with no more than two victories, while every other non-host team already has at least three. China cannot occupy the relegation position because the hosts advance to the Finals and are placed inside the final top eight.
Frequently Asked Questions
What must Ukraine do to qualify for the Men’s VNL 2026 Finals?
Ukraine must beat Germany and then need at least one of Italy, Bulgaria or Türkiye to lose. A Bulgaria or Türkiye defeat is enough after any Ukrainian win. Passing Italy requires specific set-score combinations.
Which teams control their own qualification?
Italy, Bulgaria and Türkiye. Each reaches eight wins and guarantees a top-seven finish by winning the final match.
Can Japan finish the Preliminary Phase undefeated?
Yes. A victory over Argentina would give Japan a perfect 12-0 record, the first unbeaten men’s VNL Preliminary Phase since the competition began in 2018.
Why do the Poland, Slovenia and USA matches still matter?
They determine positions two through four. Those positions decide whether a team faces the fifth-, sixth- or seventh-ranked qualifier in the quarter-finals.
Is Brazil still in the Finals race?
No. Brazil can reach seven wins, but cannot overtake enough of Italy, Bulgaria, Türkiye and Ukraine on the applicable tiebreakers.
Who has been relegated from the men’s VNL?
Canada. Their loss to Cuba left them unable to reach the three victories already held by every other non-host team near the bottom.
