Four medals. Three silver. Zero gold. The most confounding story in men’s VNL history.
The Silver Standard — USA’s Complete VNL Campaign Record, Season by Season
The United States men’s national volleyball team entered the Volleyball Nations League era with one of the richest legacies in international volleyball. Three Olympic gold medals, a World Championship title (1986), and decades of success had firmly established the Americans among the sport’s traditional powerhouses.
The VNL era, however, has told a different story. The USA have consistently remained among the world’s elite, reaching three gold medal matches and collecting four medals overall, yet the championship trophy has remained just out of reach. Three silver medals and one bronze illustrate both the program’s remarkable consistency and its frustrating inability to take the final step.
Following years of regular podium finishes, the team entered a period of transition, missing the Finals in both 2024 and 2025 while beginning a new chapter under head coach Karch Kiraly.
This guide covers the complete history of the USA men’s Volleyball Nations League campaign from 2018 through 2025, including every season, medal run, key player, coaching change, and the challenges that define the next generation of American volleyball.

Season-by-Season History
2018 — Bronze at the Inaugural Edition
The first-ever Volleyball Nations League Finals took place in Lille, France, where the United States arrived as one of the tournament favorites. Although they fell short in the semifinals, the Americans responded with an impressive 3–0 victory over Brazil to secure the bronze medal.
Russia claimed the inaugural VNL title by defeating host nation France in the championship match. For the USA, the bronze medal represented a strong beginning to the competition’s history while also foreshadowing a recurring theme: consistently competing among the world’s best without lifting the trophy.
Final result: 🥉 Bronze
2019 — First Silver: Three Sets Away from Gold in Chicago
The 2019 Finals brought the competition to Chicago, giving the United States a rare opportunity to compete for the title on home soil. Backed by passionate local support, the Americans advanced confidently to the gold medal match against defending champions Russia.
The final ended in disappointment. Russia produced a dominant performance to win in straight sets, denying the hosts their first VNL title. Despite the painful defeat, the tournament confirmed the United States as one of the world’s premier VNL programs.
Final result: 🥈 Silver
Lost to: Russia (0–3)
2021 — A Step Back in Rimini
Following the cancellation of the 2020 edition due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the VNL returned in a bio-secure bubble environment in Rimini, Italy.
Unlike previous campaigns, the Americans struggled to establish consistency throughout the preliminary round and narrowly missed qualification for the Finals, ending the tournament in seventh place.
Brazil eventually defeated Poland to capture the championship while the United States were left to regroup ahead of the next Olympic cycle.
Final result: 7th place
2022 — Second Silver: The Five-Set Heartbreak in Bologna
The 2022 VNL Finals produced one of the most dramatic championship matches in tournament history.
Facing Olympic champions France, the United States recovered from a two-set deficit to force a deciding fifth set. The comeback electrified the crowd inside Unipol Arena, but France ultimately prevailed 15–10 in the tie-break behind another outstanding performance from Earvin Ngapeth.
The defeat left the Americans painfully close to their first VNL title while reinforcing their reputation as one of the competition’s most consistent contenders.
Final result: 🥈 Silver
Lost to: France 2–3 (16–25, 19–25, 25–15, 25–21, 10–15)
2023 — Third Silver: Poland End the American Dream in Gdańsk
The 2023 Finals in Gdańsk presented another golden opportunity.
Standing opposite the United States was tournament host Poland, supported by more than 11,000 home fans inside Ergo Arena.
The Americans matched Poland through the opening two sets before the hosts gradually took control. Fueled by a spectacular 25-point performance from Łukasz Kaczmarek, Poland claimed a 3–1 victory and celebrated its first VNL title. TJ DeFalco led the American offense with 14 points, but another silver medal became the defining outcome.
Final result: 🥈 Silver
Lost to: Poland 1–3 (23–25, 26–24, 18–25, 18–25)
2024 — A Difficult Olympic Year Transition
With the Paris Olympic Games serving as the primary objective of the season, the United States rotated its roster heavily throughout the VNL.
The experimental lineups struggled to produce consistent results, and the Americans finished the Preliminary Phase in 12th place, missing the Finals for the first time since the competition adopted its expanded format.
Although the team rebounded later that summer to earn Olympic bronze in Paris, the VNL campaign highlighted the challenges of balancing long-term preparation with immediate results.
Final result: 12th place (did not qualify for the Finals)
2025 — First Campaign Under Karch Kiraly
The 2025 Volleyball Nations League marked the beginning of a new era.
After more than a decade under John Speraw, legendary coach Karch Kiraly assumed leadership of the men’s national team as USA Volleyball began a comprehensive rebuilding process.
Kiraly approached the tournament as an opportunity to accelerate the development of a new generation. Several established veterans either missed the competition or played limited roles, allowing younger players to gain valuable international experience.
The campaign ultimately came down to the final week in Japan. Despite defeating Argentina, a straight-set loss to the hosts left the Americans with a 6–6 record and 11th place overall, narrowly missing qualification for the Finals in Ningbo.
Although the results disappointed, the tournament laid the foundation for the next phase of the program under one of volleyball’s greatest figures.
Final result: 11th place (did not qualify for the Finals)
Preliminary Phase record: 6–6

One of the greatest players in USA Volleyball history, Anderson has been the offensive leader throughout multiple VNL campaigns. His experience, consistency, and scoring ability helped guide the Americans to three silver medals, and his expected return for 2026 symbolizes the program’s continued pursuit of its elusive first title.
TJ DeFalco (Outside Hitter)
Dynamic and explosive, DeFalco became the centerpiece of the American attack during the 2022 and 2023 campaigns. His 14-point performance in the 2023 final against Poland highlighted his importance on the biggest stage.
Micah Christenson (Setter)
Long regarded as one of the world’s finest setters, Christenson orchestrated the American offense during its strongest VNL years. His performances earned him recognition as the Best Setter in the 2023 VNL Dream Team.
Erik Shoji (Libero)
A multiple-time Olympian, Shoji has provided stability and leadership in the backcourt throughout the VNL era. His defensive consistency has made him one of the team’s most respected veterans.
Memorable Moment: Bologna 2022 — The Ultimate Heartbreak
USA 2–3 France — Gold Medal Match
Among all of the USA’s near misses, the 2022 final remains the closest they have come to lifting the Volleyball Nations League trophy.
After falling behind by two sets, the Americans mounted a remarkable comeback to force a deciding tie-break against the reigning Olympic champions. Every momentum shift suggested history could finally change, yet France held firm in the decisive moments to secure victory.
For many observers, the Bologna final remains the defining match of the USA’s VNL story: close enough to prove championship quality, but just short of rewriting history.
